Recently I noticed a term frequently appear in Chinese social media the Red Note – Softcore. What’s Softcore? It’s broadly defined as an American-inspired style. However, I checked Instagram and tiktok, but no ‘Softcore’ here. So, I realized that’s a Chinese-oriented Fashion trend. And I get curious and did some research about it.

This article is about the Chinese social media fashion trend “Softcore”. It’s typical elements and who what’s the short-term impact of this trend.

According to the Red Note official, soft core can be summarized as: low-saturation neutral tones * soft materials * relaxed silhouettes.
It’s color palette centers around oat, misty blue, caramel, light brown, off-white and warm grey – mostly warm hues (H < 50°) with medium-high brightness (B > 70%) and low saturation (S < 50%), with misty blue as the only cool tone that balances the warmth but only take small proportion.

The materials are tactile and breathable – cotton, knitwear, cashmere, suede, wool, linen-cotton blends – often finished with washing, brushing, or slight distressing to create a worn-in softness.
Silhouettes are loose, dropped shoulder, slightly A-line, styled through layering that feels effortless.

Typical pieces include wide-leg trousers, knit sweaters, suede jacket, twill pants, soft denim, cashmere coats, and yellow work boots, paired with long-sleeve tees as base layers.
Accessories lean practical and nostalgic – bucket hats, baseball caps, wool beanies, cross-body canvas bags, headphones and cameras.

It’s still a sprouting fashion trend, and no one has really commented on why it’s emerging – but here are my thoughts:

  1. Its great news for wool and sheepskin suppliers
  2. Everyone can relax a bit this season – with roomy silhouettes, a few extra winter snacks won’t hurt
  3. Mass-market pattern making just got easier, since oversized designs hide a lot. But crafting a Softcore piece that feels loose yet subtly intentional? That’s the real skill.

And here are some Softcore outfit inspo (:
